ten thousand hours (or ten years) of practice at it

Well, it's 10,000 hours of *deliberate* practice, in which the practicer critically looks at what went wrong in the practice sessions and tries to fix. (And the idea got popularized by Malcolm Gladwell so I'm somewhat suspicious of it.)
